Extreme Reading

Today I was looking at the NY Times Best Sellers List. I was unpleasantly surprised by the fiction list. Almost all of them concern murder, rape, terrorists or kidnappings! I figure they're best sellers because they're in demand- so why do we like stories like this? Is it the sensationalism (which makes sense when looking at our media) or the high we get from thinking this could be real?

Why don't we like stories about normal people?

Edit: Ok, I just read the Paperback Trade Fiction list and it was a little better...And the Mass-Market Fiction list was more -interesting-. (meaning, many more vampire references)
